Planted by the River

And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God. Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store. Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out. – Deuteronomy 28:2-6

Lately I have been noticing that wherever water is flowing, the grass is greener there. It will usually be very lush, and sometimes you can even see flowers that nobody planted, just springing up. Coming from my house every morning, I pass by two creeks on the way to work, and it is the same story with both of them. There is life around any place where water flows; it is just a natural thing.

Jesus said that He is the Living Water. Just as physical water causes the grass to grow thicker and wildflowers to blossom, this also happens when the Living Water is present in our lives. The closer we are to Jesus, the more contentment and satisfaction we have in our hearts, and the more blessings we see springing up in our lives. It is just a natural outcome of being in Jesus’ presence.

The Psalmist also knew this principle to be true. He wrote that those who delight in the law of the Lord “shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper” (Psalm 1:3). By following the Lord’s commandments and instructions for us, we are planting ourselves in His will. That is the fertile ground where the Living Water flows. That is where we will flourish.

The Lord wants to do wonderful things for us and make our time on earth beautiful. If we walk close to Him, the blessings mentioned in our focus verses will begin to appear in our lives. It will be as natural as wildflowers sprouting near a stream!
