We Love Him
We love him, because he first loved us. – 1 John 4:19
Sometime back, I went into my home office to catch up on bill paying, budget adjustments, and other paperwork. I am one of those odd types who likes to tinker with numbers and details. As I worked at some personal banking, my two young sons discovered that daddy was in his office. Now, I love my boys very, very much, but I wanted to complete my paperwork masterpiece before engaging them. Not dissuaded by my gentle attempts at distraction, they insisted on having my attention. Suddenly, I had an idea. I gave them each a large stack of very small sticky notes and a pen. My ploy worked. They happily began drawing pictures and letters on each note and sticking them in various places around my office. Pleased that they were occupied for a few minutes, I completed my paperwork.
After sticking countless notes here and there, one of the boys turned to me and asked, “Daddy, do you know why we do this?” Intrigued, I asked why. He responded that they were doing this because they loved me! My instant reaction was, Wow! After my eyes quit leaking, I thought about how much I love my boys and how much they love me. Taking it a step further, I then thought of God’s undistracted love to me.
We love God and do our best to live for Him, but our efforts are feeble at best. However, if we do these things out of love toward God, our efforts matter to Him! God does not just try to keep us busy so He can continue with more important things. Instead, He gives us His undivided attention. We do love Him because He first loved us!
I left those sticky notes up in my office until they began falling off the pictures, walls, desk, and bookcase. My boys had reminded me that day of how important they are in my life. More significantly, this story serves as a mental keepsake of how much God’s love means to me.
What will we do today to show our love to our Heavenly Father?
